Preparation of Buttered Grilled Birria

 Cheese Sandwiches

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams of birria meat (you can use pre-cooked or grilled Mexican-style beef)
  • 8 slices of toast bread (preferably white or sourdough bread)

  • 2 tablespoons of butter (for spreading on the bread)
  • 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese or a Mexican cheese blend
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 cup birria sauce (you can use the red sauce from cooking the birria)
  • 1 teaspoon ground chili pepper (optional, depending on preference)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

                                 -Preparation:

  1. Prepare the Birria Meat:

    • If you don't have ready-made birria, you can cook beef slowly with traditional Mexican spices (such as cumin, chili powder, garlic, thyme, cinnamon, and vinegar), then shred the meat after cooking to get a soft texture.
    • Save a bit of the red sauce from cooking the meat to use later.
  2. Heat the Meat:

    • In a skillet over medium heat, add a little vegetable oil or butter, then add the chopped onion and minced garlic, stirring until the onion becomes soft and translucent.
    • Add the shredded birria meat to the skillet with the ground chili pepper, and stir until the meat is heated and absorbs the flavors of the onion and garlic.
    • Add 1/2 cup of birria sauce and stir until the meat is fully coated with the sauce. Let it cook for a few minutes to soak in the flavors.

  3. Prepare the Sandwiches:

    • In a small bowl, melt the butter over low heat if it's solid.
    • Spread a generous amount of butter on one side of each slice of bread, ensuring all corners are covered for even browning.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches:

    • On the unbuttered side of the bread, spread a layer of shredded cheddar cheese and some mozzarella for a rich, cheesy texture.
    • Add a portion of the hot birria meat on top of the cheese. Try to keep the portions balanced for an even taste.
    • Add an extra layer of cheese on top of the meat for more melt-in-your-mouth goodness whencooked.

  5. Grilling:

    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
    • Place the sandwiches on the skillet, buttered side down.
    • Let the sandwiches cook for a few minutes until the bottom turns golden and crispy, then flip them to cook the other side until both sides are golden and the cheese is fully melted.
  6. Serving:

    • Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and place them on a cutting board.
    • Use a sharp knife to cut the sandwiches diagonally in half, showcasing the melted cheese and delicious birria meat.
    • Serve the sandwiches hot, with extra birria sauce or your favorite Mexican dipping sauce like guacamole or salsa.
    • Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro for a burst of flavor.

                         -Additional Tips:

  • For an extra kick, you can add some pickled jalapeño slices or grilled peppers inside the sandwich.
  • Make sure to use thick bread that can withstand the heat of grilling and hold up to the melted cheese.

With this recipe, you'll have amazing buttered grilled birria cheese sandwiches, offering a perfect combination of tender meat and gooey cheese for a flavorful, satisfying experience.
