How to Make Ice Cream
Ingredients:
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Optional add-ins: chocolate chips, fruit pieces, caramel, nuts
Instructions:
1. Prepare the mixture: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until the sugar is fully dissolved.
2. Chill: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the mixture for at least two hours, preferably overnight, to ensure the mixture is completely cold before freezing.
3. Freezing in an ice cream maker: Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer's instructions (usually taking about 20-30 minutes). If you don't have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a shallow dish and place it in the freezer, stirring it every 30 minutes until it firms up.
4. Add-ins: In the last 5 minutes of churning, you can add chocolate chips, fruit pieces, or nuts if desired.
5. Serve: Once the ice cream reaches a soft consistency, you can enjoy it immediately or place it in an airtight container and freeze for a few hours for a firmer texture.
History of Ice Cream
The history of ice cream dates back to ancient times. It is believed that the Chinese were among the first to make an early version of ice cream around 200 BC, using a mixture of cooked rice, milk, and snow. However, the modern form of ice cream as we know it today began to appear in Europe in the 17th century.
The spread of ice cream is often credited to Catherine de' Medici , an Italian noblewoman who introduced ice cream recipes to France when she married King Henry II in the 16th century. By the 18th century, ice cream became more popular in North America and Europe.
In 1843, Nancy Johnson patented a hand-cranked ice cream maker, which greatly simplified ice cream production and contributed to its widespread popularity.
