How to Make Apple Pie
Ingredients:
For the crust:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup cold unsalted butter (cut into cubes)
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup very cold water
For the filling:
-
6-7 apples, peeled and sliced
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions:
1. Prepare the crust: In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cold butter and work it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water, mixing until the dough just comes together. Divide the dough into two discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least an hour.
2. Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and lemon juice until well coated.
3. Assemble the pie: Roll out one disc of dough and fit it into the bottom of a pie pan. Pour the apple filling into the crust and dot with butter. Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the filling. Seal the edges and cut a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
4. Bake: Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Bake the pie for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling. Allow the pie to cool before serving.
History of Apple Pie
Apple pie has a long and rich history, with its origins tracing back to medieval Europe. The earliest documented recipe for apple pie dates back to England in 1381, featuring ingredients like apples, figs, raisins, and pears.
However, apple pie as we know it today became a symbol of American culture. While no single person is credited with inventing the modern apple pie, it was introduced to North America by European settlers in the 17th century and became incredibly popular in the United States.
